More often than not, in contrast to previous practices, fragrance oil companies are finding ways to produce scents that don't contain carcinogenic, toxic, or mutagenic ingredients, even if many candles off the shelf still contain these in small amounts.
Regardless, it's hard to compare the scent produced in a lab of a pine needle or lavender stem to what can naturally be extracted from the original source as an essential oil. Essential oils are not a man-made portrait, but the plant's actual olfactory profile.
